Brighton 7–0 Walsall, fifty years on

Sussex by the Sea · Sussex ·

Fifty years ago today, on 5 October 1976, Brighton beat Walsall 7–0 at the Goldstone Ground in Division Three. It was 0–0 at half-time; Peter Ward then scored four and Ian Mellor three, all in the second half, attacking downhill towards the South Stand into wind and driving rain. Rupert tells the story, with Alan Mullery's own words after the match, and follows the club's journey from the Third Division to the Premier League and a first European win. Goal minutes and the attendance are left out because the sources disagree.

Pyramid Edition

Pyramid Edition 1: the National League while the big leagues rest

With the Premier League on international duty, Jonny and Rhys give the National League the whole show. Yeovil score six, Barrow win it in stoppage time, Boreham Wood come from behind and Woking's substitute Liam Dulson scores twice. Then all the results, the table and who moved, Worthing's third trip north in Miles on the Clock, and Charlotte's Producer's Pick: Gateshead 1–2 Worthing. Goal minutes follow BBC Sport; where clubs' own reports differ by a minute or so, the sources note it. Road miles are our own estimates (fastest route, OpenStreetMap routing).

Sussex by the Sea: Gateshead 1–2 Worthing

Worthing make it three wins from three northern trips with a 2–1 victory at Gateshead. Charlotte runs through the goals and the miles travelled, while Rupert revisits Brighton's journey from the Goldstone to the Amex and the Hinshelwood family links between the two Sussex clubs.
